The Piney Woods region of East Texas, with its millions of acres of pine forests and wetlands, has a unique appeal all its own. Rolling terrain covered with pines and oaks, and rich bottomlands with tall hardwoods make the East Texas Pinewoods unique and part of a much larger area of pine-hardwood forest that extends into adjoining Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Texas' four national forests, which offer wonderful camping, hiking and fishing are all located in this densely wooded area of the state. History buffs can visit the 1800s, via quaint historic towns and replica pioneer settlements and many of the Victorian buildings. Timber and cattle are the primary industries in the area and due to this farms are relatively small in comparison with the state average.

Piney Woods region consists mainly of Medically Underserved Areas (MUA's) and also has some counties that qualify as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA's).
