Vermont is ranked the healthiest state in the nation, according to the most recent edition of America's health rankings. With the quality of care provided by Vermont's physicians and other heath care providers, along with the Blueprint for Health and the goal of universal healthcare access, VT is at the forefront of national healthcare reform.

In addition to unlimited recreational activities, Vermont has a rich cultural milieu, including local arts and crafts and many small farms that produce artisanal foods. Beautiful scenery, country stores, peaceful farmlands and a relaxed attitude make Vermont an ideal place to call home.

Key Points

  • At the forefront of healthcare reform.
  • Many ski areas, including Killington and Jay Peak.
  • Close proximity to Montreal, Albany, Boston, the Seacoast of New Hampshire and outlet shopping.
  • Recreational opportunities abound due to the numerous freshwater lakes, rivers and mountains and the four seasons of natural beauty.
  • Green Mountain National Forest and the Long Trail.

A limited number of J1 Visa waivers are granted to non-resident physicians who agree to work in an underserved area of Vermont for a period of three years. Vermont prioritizes primary care specialties, but considers waivers for all specialties that provide direct patient care and based on community need and shortage designation. There are 20 slots available for providers to practice within federally designated health professional shortage areas or medically underserved areas, and 10 slots available for non-designated areas each year.  Physicians are required to be licensed in the State of Vermont and have an employment contract in place before an eligible facility can request a waiver on behalf of the physician.  The physician must assume employment on a full-time basis within 90 days of the approval of the waiver by INS.  The facility is required to accept patients regardless of ability to pay, offer a sliding fee scale, and must show documentation that the physician will work with underserved patients.

The Vermont Office of Rural Health manages J1 waiver applications but does not maintain a list of vacancies for J1 Visa physicians or provide placement services. The State office refers physicians to the NH VT Recruitment Center, a Service of Bi-State Primary Care Association, as a point of contact for the recruitment of primary care providers and specialists in Vermont. Bi-State's Recruitment Center tracks vacancies in Vermont and maintains a listing of current opportunities on the 3RNet website.
