The mighty Missouri River runs through the center of South Dakota and provides endless opportunities for water recreation as well as some of the best fishing and hunting in the world. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, two of America’s greatest explorers, traveled through the heart of South Dakota in the early 1800’s.
The tales of their famous exploits are still being told today at various historical sites along the river that showcase regional history and culture in top quality museums and attractions. Among them are the Akta Lakota Museum in Chamberlain and the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Additionally, the State Capitol building in Pierre is one of the most fully restored capitol buildings in the country.
