In New Jersey, there are 24 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC’s) with over 118 licensed ambulatory care facilities located in both urban centers and rural communities. These health centers offer a range of primary health care services at locations statewide and are safety net for the uninsured, vulnerable and medically underserved populations. According to the 2012 data, these health centers were the family doctor and medical home for over 466,000 individuals. About 45% of the FQHC users are uninsured and 41% are covered by Medicaid.
NEW: New Jersey correctional health care now has 12 state prisons that have been approved as designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) sites in primary, dental and mental health. As a result, health care staff can apply for loan repayment at approved sites. The health care providers in these correctional facilities are responsible for the provision of comprehensive medical and mental health services to the patient population. On the physical health side: physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, license clinical social workers, dental hygienists and medical technicians are responsible for inmates' physical health care. The behaviorial health programs and staff provides for the mental health needs for both adults and juvenile offenders.
