Western Illinois is called River Country, as its location between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers was the basis for the majority of the industry and economy of the area in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. However, Western Illinois became more than a just a stopover shipping community. The banks and bluffs of Mark Twain’s America are now home to the Great River Road, which meanders along the banks of the Mississippi through scenic and wild life-rich forests, as well as tiny hamlets featuring antique shops and vineyards.
