Massachusetts (, in the heart of scenic historic New England, presents a wealth of exciting possibilities for its residents and many visitors. With a four-season climate and a geography that ranges from seashores to scenic pastures to a section of the Appalachian Mountains, Massachusetts offers a choice of rural, suburban, and urban lifestyles all within a few hours drive of each other.

Massachusetts is often thought of as urban because of the dense concentration of people living in Boston, suburban metro-Boston, and our eastern industrial cities. But, much of Massachusetts is comprised of small towns spread across scenic mountain ranges, along river valleys, in farming communities, within forested expanses, in former small mill towns, and rural coastal villages and Island communities. Nearly half of our towns (48%, 169 towns) and 65% of the state’s landmass are rural by at least one federal rural definition, primarily in western, central, and coastal southeast Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is known throughout the world for its historical, educational and cultural resources. It is considered to have one of the best public school systems in the country and was the first state to mandate a public education. It is home to many of the nation’s most renowned preparatory schools, colleges, and universities.

For the health care professional, Massachusetts offers access to state of the art medicine at several of the world’s leading medical schools, teaching hospitals and medical research centers. A recent esteemed winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine is Dr. Craig C. Mello, a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Medical School ( (UMMS) in central Massachusetts. UMMS, currently ranked fourth in the nation in primary care medical education, provides support to rural health professionals through research, teaching including a Rural Health Scholars Program, continuing medical education, its clinical facilities, and an extensive network of AHEC centers.

Outdoor recreation is also an integral part of living in Massachusetts. The profound natural beauty, four season climate, and varied geography of lakes and rivers, forests and fields, mountains and beaches, along with an extensive national and state park system provide opportunities for year round enjoyment. There are many places for outdoor recreation whether it is cross-country skiing in the winter, beautiful beaches in the summer, or glorious hiking in the spring and fall.
