Elgin is a quaint and cozy town where country living meets opportunity. You'll be welcomed with a small-town vibe that is friendly, safe, and is a great place to take walks, visit and connect with neighbors. Every Friday evening, from the end of May through Labor Day, you'll get the opportunity to get out and meet more of our friends while attending one of our evening "burgers in the park", where members of the Lions group grill burgers and hotdogs while different churches and high school organizations sell slices of homemade mouth-watering pie. Try it once and you'll go back every week!
We have all the amenities one may need, ranging from the sweetest coffee shop on the corner to shopping for clothes at our local clothing boutique or Sandlily, a place that sells artwork and articles of clothing. You can get some exercise while bowling and grabbing a bite to eat at our local cafe, or you can skip the cafe and head to the gym for a daily workout. We also have a few other businesses eager to meet you, including a True Value, two hair salons, a martial arts school, grocery store, drug store, and our Dollar General. We do have a library on main street open Monday through Friday, and our local school teaches grades Pre-k through 12th grade and has an indoor Olympic sized swimming pool where you can participate in water aerobics classes or just go swim if you desire! We are located approximately 15 miles south of Lake Tschida and 4 miles north of Sheep Creek Dam. Depending on where your interests lie, you can go hit the beach and swim at Lake Tschida or go hiking at Sunrise at Sheep Creek, or go camping at either in a safe and beautiful spot. We are 78 miles south-west of Bismarck, our state capital; three hours north of historic Deadwood, SD and four hours south of the International Peace Garden, places we encourage you to go visit. And when you do come for a visit, you will quickly come to understand how we have been referred to as the "Gem of the Prairie".
Jacobson Memorial Hospital is the largest employer in the county, so you will meet plenty of friends and find that this is just like home away from home!
