We’re celebrating National Rural Health Day and the #PowerOfRural by celebrating rural facilities who have been successful in their recruitment efforts. Recruiting health care providers can be a challenge—especially in rural areas. We’re recognizing rural facilities for their recruitment excellence!

Today we're highlighting Fairfield Medical Associates in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Fairfield Medical recruited a physician and a physician assistant through 3RNet! Congrats!

Tell us about Fairfield Medical Associates and your community:

We are a family practice rural health clinic located in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Winnsboro has a population of approximately 3,000 and is located in Fairfield County, which has a population of 22,600.

We currently have three locations: two in Fairfield county and one in Blythewood (Richland County). We also have a nursing home in Columbia. We service over 8,000 patients and are still growing.

We have three full time physicians and one part-time Pediatrician. We also employ three family nurse practitioners and two physician assistants. We are currently looking to add full time physicians to help with the transition or our current physicians who are approaching retirement age.

Why do people enjoy working at Fairfield Medical Associates?

Our patients are very grateful for the providers and the personal care they receive here. Our employees are a key ingredient  to our success. We have achieved many awards, such as PCMH level 3 and national recognition for Hypertension control to name a few. We are proud to still be an independent, free standing rural health clinic and offer many ancillaries services. We are able to make decision without having to go through all the red tape of a hospital system.

What makes Winnsboro a great place to live and work?

We are a quaint, small town with a lot of Revolutionary and Civil War history located in central South Carolina, within hours of some of the best beaches in America. Our location has the best of both worlds: we are a rural community but within 30 minutes of Columbia, South Carolina (a top tourist destination) and 45 minutes to Charlotte, North Carolina, another large city with all the amenities. We're also only a few hours from the Appalachian mountains!

Fairfield County is a favored destination for hunting and fishing enthusiasts and we are home to two popular lakes. Winnsboro is a great place for people who want to live in the country (have the county/farm life) but be close to big city activities.

Tell us about your connection to your 3RNet member.

We were connected with 3RNet through the South Carolina Office of Rural Health. Jessica at the Office or Rural Health was wonderful. We were able to tell her what we were looking for and she connected us with several providers. We immediately connected with them via email and phone to tell them a little about us and set up meeting for them to come and see the facilities and meet the staff.

Tell us why you think you’re successful with your recruitment and retention efforts.

Our staff is wonderful and I think that is what often tips the scales in our favor, the warm welcomes you receive from everyone. Also, my providers are all very welcoming and down to earth, and so willing to help and teach the providers who are fresh out of school. We are also an independent privately owned practice that works hard to be on the forefront of technology. We try to offer many tests in house so providers are able to get results faster in order to treat patients appropriately. Also, being a privately owned practice enables us to make changes without having to wait for corporate or system approval.

Share a piece of advice! What would you tell someone who is recruiting OR someone who is BEING recruited?

Working for a private office (like us) has lots of advantages. One big one is the providers are able to practice medicine without all the stress of a big hospital sending down orders of how they want you to practice.
