We’re celebrating National Rural Health Day and the #PowerOfRural by celebrating rural facilities who have been successful in their recruitment efforts. Recruiting health care providers can be a challenge—especially in rural areas. We’re recognizing rural facilities for their recruitment excellence!

Today we're highlighting My Community Dental Centers in Marquette, Michigan. My Community Dental Centers recruited a dentist, Dr. Kozeluh (who also added to our conversation) through 3RNet! Congrats!

Tell us a bit about My Community Dental Centers.

Established in 2006, My Community Dental Centers Inc. (MCDC) is one of the largest non-profit 501(c)3 Dental Support Organizations in the United States. MCDC primarily serves patients covered through Medicaid, MI Child, Healthy Kids, and Healthy Michigan Plan but also welcomes individuals with private dental insurance. The organization also offers a sliding fee scale for patients without dental insurance, which provides reduced fees based on household income. Operating 33 dental centers throughout Michigan, with more than 100,000 unduplicated patients served in 2017, MCDC focuses on quality care that is customized for each patient and offered in a patient-centered atmosphere. MCDC operates its Marquette Dental Center in partnership with the Marquette County Health Department. Marquette is a thriving college town but is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (a Health Professional Shortage Area). MCDC Marquette aims to increase access to dental care to the underserved in the Marquette community and surrounding areas.

Why do people enjoy working at MCDC?

The providers and support staff are able to help those in need of affordable oral healthcare, getting satisfaction out of helping people in need, who may not be able to receive good care anywhere else.

Dr. Kozeluh, the dentist MCDC found through 3RNet, added:

The Marquette center has a wonderful team with people who are kind, caring and helpful. We have the opportunity to work with the underserved population in our community and we all take pride in offering quality, comprehensive care to everyone.

What makes Marquette a great place to live and work?

The Marquette area is growing and has many things to do within the community. The new Hospital has been completed, Northern Michigan University has many programs and opportunities for lifelong learning, the Lake Superior shoreline has opportunities for many activities, along with the winter months and plenty of sports and hiking, biking, and other fun things to do.

Dr. Kozeluh, the dentist MCDC found through 3RNet, added:

We love to live and work in Marquette for many reasons. The upper peninsula of Michigan has a tight knit and friendly community that gives a warm feeling to the area. We are also very spoiled with amazing outdoor recreation opportunities. Mountain biking, skiing, hunting and fishing are all excellent here and these activities draw people from around the country to vacation or live. It is a privilege to find such a great place to work in such a unique area.

Rachel Ruddock has been very helpful in passing along candidates who show an interest in our opportunities in Michigan. The recruiting resources at 3RNet have given us an opportunity to consider candidates who are interested in our dental centers that are located in smaller, more rural communities. The providers who want to work in these communities are committed to providing service and healthcare to the many patients who may not receive proper care or have other barriers to care, such as financial resources. There are many resources available to those providers who are looking for a career opportunity like ours. 3RNet has been able to link MCDC with the right candidates that fit our organization.

What makes you successful with your recruitment and retention efforts?

Even as a smaller non-profit, we have dedicated staff that are devoted to the recruitment of dentists for MCDC. Our efforts range in many social media recruiting sites and job posting boards, along with on-campus recruiting and our most effective method, which is by internal referrals. We offer a $10,000 referral bonus to anyone who provides us with a name of a candidate who’s interested in an opportunity at MCDC, and becomes hired into an open position.

Share a piece of advice! What would you tell someone who is recruiting or someone who is being recruited?

My advice for anyone who is going through the recruitment or interview process is to just ‘be yourself’. My focus on the selection process is to make a candidate feel comfortable during the interview, keeping it as close to a conversation or information sharing session between two people. We both, the candidate and myself or the interviewer, is just seeking information about the candidate and what they are looking for in a career. If it’s not a fit, that decision could be made by either party.
