We’re celebrating National Rural Health Day and the #powerofrural by celebrating rural facilities who have been successful in their recruitment efforts. Recruiting health care providers can be a challenge—especially in rural areas. So, we're recognizing rural facilities for their recruitment excellence! Today we're highlighting Newport Hospital and Health Services in Newport, Washington. Newport Hospital and Health Services recruited a general surgeon through 3RNet! Congrats!

Tell us a bit about Newport Hospital and Health Services.
As a critical access hospital with a rural health clinic, we offer excellent care to all and proudly serve as a patient-centered medical home to our residents in Eastern Washington and our neighbors in Northern Idaho. We represent Pend Oreille County Public Hospital District #1 (a municipal corporation established in 1921). NHHS employs seven (7) primary care physicians, three (3) health care affiliates, two (2) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and a General Surgeon. We offer complete obstetrical care including epidural anesthesia and Cesarean deliveries in a private, family setting. Outpatient services are comprised of full service diagnostic imaging (radiology), laboratory, pathology and licensed physical and restorative therapy. NHHS also offers short stay and same day surgical services and a fully staffed general medical acute care unit. In August of 2016, we opened Newport Health Center, a brand new rural health clinic that consolidated our two previous clinics, as well as to provide increased capacity for the addition of more family practice providers. Newport Health Center currently has 10 providers and room for 12. Not only does the new clinic provide a modern, esthetically pleasing space for patient care, it allows NHHS to increase operational efficiencies and streamline the patient care experience. In addition, there is now a dedicated space for county mental health providers to come in and meet with clients during their primary care visit. This provides a more integrated approach to whole person care. To complete our full spectrum of care, we own and operate River Mountain Village Assisted Living, as well as our long term care and skilled nursing facility.

Why do people enjoy working at Newport Hospital and Health Services?
People enjoy working at Newport Hospital and Health Services because we offer extremely competitive wages and benefits, focus on staff development and providing continuous education (varying from general computer skills to the professional certificates for ALS, BLS, PALS, ATLS, etc.) and embody a culture of effectiveness. In fact, in the last three years, almost 100% of our staff has completed the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People training. It’s that kind of investment in our people that makes NHHS a great place to work. Also, Newport Hospital and Health Services is a great community partner. With 300 employees, we are the largest employer in the county and take pride in giving back. We operate the Healthy Kids Snack Bags program, delivering weekly snack bags to over 200 children in Newport and surrounding communities. We also participate in the Pend Oreille Health Coalition, a local group representing all sectors along the spectrum of physical, behavioral and social determinants of health.

What makes Newport a great place to live and work?

Newport, Washington lies in the heart of Pend Oreille County and neighbors the communities of Metaline Falls, Metaline, Cusick, Usk, Oldtown, and Priest River. These rural towns may span two counties and cross the Washington/Idaho state line, but they all border the majestic, north-flowing Pend Oreille River. Life along the Pend Oreille River is rich in history, culture, and multi-seasonal recreational opportunities. With 100MB fiber far-reaching into Pend Oreille County, working and living here has never been better. The “High Tech High Rec” lifestyle allows for super high speed internet while living amidst pristine mountain landscapes. Four (4) ski resorts are also accessible to Newport, varying in distance from 45 minutes to an hour and a half drive.

Why do you think you’ve been successful with your recruitment efforts?
People fall in love with Newport Hospital and Health Services, as well as scenic Pend Oreille County. We strive to continually remain competitive with not only wages and benefits, but employee education as well. Upward mobility is common and encouraged across the organization for all levels of employment. Our local area really sells itself, extending opportunities for active living and a wonderful place to raise a family.

How does Newport Hospital and Health Services use 3RNet in their recruitment efforts?
We were new to physician recruitment because our providers have been with us for a long time. We were introduced to the 3RNet site and discovered its ease of use and expansive reach. We have been advertising on 3RNet for the past several years and really enjoy the freedom and ability to search candidates’ resumes and posting harder-to-fill positions.  Not to mention, requests for assistance are always responded to quickly.  We have successfully filled two (2) physician openings (a husband/wife team) for our family practice rural health clinic.  3RNet doesn’t stop at job postings; they also offer the 3RNet Academy which we are actively pursuing for rural recruitment education.
Recruiting can be hard. What advice would you give to others trying to recruit?
Look at all of your options, but make sure to include the “quality of life” component in your decision (think “win-win”). Pend Oreille County provides the quaint, scenic, and adventurous lifestyle with quick access to the city, Spokane International Airport, and larger shopping centers. A traffic jam in Pend Oreille County might represent a heard of elk crossing the street, or some wild turkeys that don’t wish to share the road.  In a rural community, we all get to know each other. We understand that it takes all of us working together to create an abundant lifestyle rich in outdoor recreational opportunities, wide-open spaces, and operating at a gentler pace than our urban counterparts.
