Southern Vermont sits on the border of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York, and is only a short drive from the Metro areas of Hartford, Boston and New York City.

Major cities in southern Vermont are Bennington, Brattleboro and Rutland.

Bennington is Vermont’s fifth largest community, nestled in the southwestern part of Vermont—just 9 miles from New York and 14 miles from Massachusetts. Bennington is host to a variety of attractions including museums, an arts center, and covered bridges.

Brattleboro is a community of 12,000 located in the southeast area of the state on Interstate 91. Known as the “Gateway to Vermont,” it has easy access to Massachusetts and Connecticut. Brattleboro offers rich cultural diversity such as theaters, art galleries, a museum, a music center, factory outlets, outdoor activities and close proximity to ski areas.

Rutland, nestled in the heart of the Green Mountain State, is the second largest city in Vermont. It is mid-way between Burlington and Bennington. The Rutland region offers a wide variety of musicals, art events, band concerts, along with the annual Killington Music Festival, Quechee Gorge (Vermont’s version of the Grand Canyon) and fine schools and colleges. Outdoor activities abound in this area with skiing at Killington, Pico and Okemo ski resorts, hiking and 8 excellent golf courses.

A limited number of J1 Visa waivers are granted to non-resident physicians who agree to work in an underserved area of Vermont for a period of three years. Vermont prioritizes primary care specialties, but considers waivers for all specialties that provide direct patient care and based on community need and shortage designation. There are 20 slots available for providers to practice within federally designated health professional shortage areas or medically underserved areas, and 10 slots available for non-designated areas each year.  Physicians are required to be licensed in the State of Vermont and have an employment contract in place before an eligible facility can request a waiver on behalf of the physician.  The physician must assume employment on a full-time basis within 90 days of the approval of the waiver by INS.  The facility is required to accept patients regardless of ability to pay, offer a sliding fee scale, and must show documentation that the physician will work with underserved patients.
