Larger than several states combined, the Big Bend Country of West Texas offers visitors 19th century U.S. Army posts that once guarded the pioneers' westward trail, and mountain communities that feature a rich blend of Mexican, Indian, and Anglo cultures, such as the city of El Paso. Visitors can hike the state's tallest mountain, Guadalupe Peak is 8,749 feet above sea level, in the Guadalupe Mountains, float down the Rio Grande River, or camp in the untamed paradise of Big Bend National Park's colorful mountains and desert floors.
The Big Bend Country region is also home to several rare animal species like the Mexican spotted owl and the greater long-nosed bat, and has and due to the diversity of soils and elevations many types of vegetation exist here.
