Southeastern Oklahoma encompasses the southeastern quarter of the state of Oklahoma. The region is popular for outdoor recreation like water sports, mountain biking, hiking, hunting, horse back riding, fishing, and national scenic drives. The are is home to mostly rural cities and communities, with Durant, McAlester, Idabel, Poteau and Hugo. The area is home to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Carl Albert State College and Eastern Oklahoma State College. The northern area is close to the Tulsa metro area, while the southern half is a short distance to DFW, OKC and Tulsa. Eastern areas of the region are within a short distance of both Tulsa and Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
