Northwest Minnesota is where prairie meets the northwoods. The remnants of the great Lake Agassiz has left a large watershed in this region known as the Red River of the North. This area is rich and fertile with plenty of wetland areas, including the iconic Lake of the Woods and Red River Valley, the location of the Treaty of 1818. Itasca State Park, and Lake Itasca within, form the headwaters of the Mississippi River that flows south straight to the Gulf of Mexico.

Northwest Minnesota and Central Minnesota have the highest concentration of bald eagles in the continental United States. Bird-watching is a common hobby in this area, along with fishing, biking, hiking, and just cruising along the byways. Thief River Falls, Walker, Bemidji, Park Rapids, and Detroit Lakes are just a few of the areas that offer great scenic tours for motorcyclists and cruisers alike.

Northwest Minnesota's largest city is Moorhead, with a population of approximately 39,000 that borders the West Central region. Next is Bemidji, a commercial center for the Northwest region with a cozy population of just over 13,000. Bemidji is perhaps most famous for being the home of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox! Both areas offer education opportunities and a rich culture with music festivals, theater, and cultural heritage sites.

Northwest Minnesota encompasses 12 counties and over 14 cities and towns, with a total population of just over 170,000. The region is bordered by North Dakota to the west and Canada to the north.

Minnesota is committed to helping all Minnesotans obtain access to quality, affordable health care. Due to the difficulties some areas experience recruiting and retaining physicians, many communities turn to international medical graduates and J-1 Visa Waivers to fill their physician vacancies. The Minnesota Department of Health's Office of Rural Health and Primary Care developed this guide to the J-1Visa Waiver Review and Recommendation Process.
