Many people consider Mt. Desert Island to be the most beautiful and unique island on the Atlantic Coast. Some would say, in the world. A relatively large island, Mt. Desert rises from the eastern edge of Hancock County. With its famed easterly outpost along with its overlooked inland hills and cliffs and lakes, Hancock Country itself can make a claim to be the most stunning single county in Maine- and perhaps in the world. Mt. Desert is pronounced like what you’d eat after a meal—after the original French name, "L’isle de les Monts Desert" (The Island of the Desert Mountains). It is home to such legendary vacation meccas as Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor as well as to Acadia National Park, one of the smallest and most visited of our National Parks. As crowded and touristy as the Acadia/Bar Harbor experience can be, with millions of guests every summer, peace and solitude are usually not far away—if you know what corner to hike around.
