Southern Illinois combines a rich history and a burgeoning industry into a unique blend of American life, with connections to both past and future. The Shawnee National Forrest and the Garden of the Gods provide the backdrop for growing recreational tourism that attracts climbers, hikers, bikers and riders alike. Fort Massac on the Ohio River offers a genuine historic look at the exploration of Lewis and Clark. Southern Illinois is also home to the annual Superman festival held in Metropolis.
