Hilo is a small, rural and multicultural town. The Hilo Medical Center serves ¾ of the island population of 240,000. Located on the rainy side of the Island of Hawaii, commonly known as the Big Island, Hilo offers breathtaking natural beauty plus all the amenities of a charming and vibrant town. It’s known for Wailuku River State Park, featuring Rainbow Falls, with its colorful mists. Hilo Bay with Polynesian style outrigger canoe paddling clubs that host local, state, national and international races. The Hilo Farmers Market is one of the best open markets in Hawaii. Suisan Fish Market, Liliuokalani Park, Banyan Drive and King Kamehameha Statue are local icons. The downtown features: centuries old, wooden storefronts, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places, housing a variety of galleries, shops, restaurants and cultural sites. Hilo is a historic Hawaiian town full of legends and traditions. An international hula competition, the Merry Monarch, fills the town with dancers and spectators in the spring. The University of Hawaii has its science campus in Hilo, featuring astronomy, marine science, volcanology and tropical agriculture. From the place that King Kamehameha ruled all the Hawaiian Islands to a plantation town to a now diverse and thriving farm based community, Hilo offers a healthy life style and exposure to a diversity of foods and cultures.

 

As the Big Island's leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care, Hilo Medical Center delivers a full range of services and programs. The 20-acre campus includes acute hospital patients, behavioral health unit and our long-term care facility. There are over 1,000 employees and a medical staff comprised 125 physicians, physician assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. The hospital is state owned and operated and serves a community that is underserved with limited primary care and mental health access. This is the premier learning campus on the island, hosting medical students, pharmacy students, nursing students and our own Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency Program. The hospital is committed to serving the health needs of the community.
