The Central region is the heart of Georgia. In the midlands, the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers come together to form the Altamaha, the only major river in Georgia that flows to the sea uninterrupted by a dam or other obstruction.

The Central region's first city, Augusta, was founded by James Oglethorpe as a riverside trading post. Augusta grew to become the hub of the region's cotton and textile industries. The Civil War left its mark throughout the region, destroying much-including the seemingly unstoppable cotton economy.

The Historic South has proven to be a hotbed for music—giving birth to performers as diverse as James Brown, Alan Jackson, Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Trisha Yearwood, and R.E.M. Festivals of all sorts are celebrated in thriving small towns throughout the year. It's where shaded rocking chairs welcome road-weary travelers, vibrant cities turn up the volume with lively nightlife, and well-preserved historic districts harbor hidden treasures for antique hunters.
