Alaska
J1 Visa: Alaska participates in the State Conrad 30 program but we do not provide direct recruitment services for J1 candidates. There are several Conrad 30 slots available, but opportunities for J1 physicians in Alaska are very limited. Specialties are accepted.
To request a State of Alaska Conrad 30 waiver recommendation letter, candidates need to:
1) apply for a J-1 Visa waiver through the U.S. Department of State;
2) get a waiver review case number from U.S. Department of State;
3) secure an employment contract with a medical facility in a HPSA, signed by the candidate and the head of the facility, to provide patient care for at least 40 hours per week for a 3-year term;
4) send required information to Nancy Barros at the Alaska Dept. of Health and Social Services.

J1 Visa: California accepts 30 applications per year for the J-1 Visa (Conrad 30 waiver) Program. Applications are accepted on a first come first served basis beginning October 1 of each year. The California J1 Visa Waiver Program does not provide direct recruitment services for J1 candidates.
This program is open to board eligible or board certified primary care physicians (GPs and FPs), gynecologists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists. This program is not open to nurses or behavioral health specialists. Vermont
J1 Visa: A limited number of J-1 Visa waivers are granted to non-resident physicians who agree to work in an underserved area of Vermont for a period of three years. Vermont considers waivers for all specialties based on community need and shortage designation. In order to be considered for a J-1 waiver request, the
J-1 Visa waiver candidate should obtain a Vermont medical license application directly from the Vermont Board of Medical Practice in order to initiate the application process as soon as the J-1 Visa waiver candidate expresses and interest in seeking employment in Vermont.
